WILKES-BARRE, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball picked up an important MAC Freedom win at King's College to move into a tie for third in the MAC Freedom Standings.
Kay Wulah kept her strong run going with 22 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots, and
Jaelyn Harris made four 3-pointers to finish with 20 points.
How It Happened:
The Eagles (11-9, 6-3 MAC Freedom) dropped a close decision to the Monarchs to start the league season. Playing again without top-scorer
Minika Glenn, the Eagles needed a big effort from the entire squad. They shot over 43 percent from the floor in each of the four quarters and had all five starters with at least five rebounds.
The Eagles took the lead for good in the game on a 9-to-0 run over a two-minute stretch in the second quarter. Four different players scored in the burst. Wulah converted from just inside the foul line from
Da'Naziah Brown. Brown found
Brynn Schmidt with a toe on the line for a 24-23 lead moments later.
Naomi Harris converted a 3-pointer on a feed from
Jaelyn Harris for a four-point edge and
Viki Kneis finished the burst on a lay-up from
Naomi Harris for a 29-23 lead with six minutes left in the first half.
The Monarchs (12-8, 6-3 MAC Freedom) closed the gap to three points late, but Brown hit a basket and then located Karla Zazopoulos for a 3-pointer. The Eagles had 11 assists on their 15 first-half baskets and led 37-29 at the half.
The Eastern lead grew to 60-45 with a 23-point third quarter.
Jaelyn Harris was 3-of-5 with a pair of 3-pointers to pace the Eagles in the frame. King's shot 5-of-13 in the period.
The hosts made a push with a 12-to-2 run to start the fourth period, but
Jaelyn Harris again came up with a big shot from deep to end the run and spark an Eastern response. King's scored a pair of free throws, but the Eagles scored the next 12 points to push the lead to 18 with two minutes to play.
Kneis scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Brown nearly matched her line with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Schmidt had six points and five rebounds and Zazopoulos had five points.
Coach Houston Says:
"This was a big road win. We did a great job sharing the ball. We had 22 assists on 33 baskets. We put together a great team effort on the glass to outrebound them by ten. Kay and Jae had another monster game on offense. Viki and Naomi did a outstanding job defending the post. Prociak had 19, but we made her take 15 shots to get them. We got good contributions from our bench to earn a really tough win. I am very proud of our effort tonight."
Up Next:
The Eagles will host Delaware Valley on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Eagles sit tied with King's and a game in front of Stevens in the MAC Freedom standings. Though Eastern and King's are tied, the Monarchs hold a tiebreaker with their win over DeSales earlier in the season.
