ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern Unviersity Women's Lacrosse controlled possession throughout and earned a 19-6 win over the visiting Houghton College Highlanders (1-1) to open the season.
Meghan Kosmides scored a game-high six goals and secured 16 draw controls.
How It Happened:
The Eagles won the first draw but failed on two-consecutive clearing attempts. Head Coach
Elizabeth Gainer used the first timeout of her Eastern coaching career three minutes into the game to settle her team, but the Highlanders capitalized. After
Mackenzie Dix split a double-team on the drive to equalize, the Eagles again ran into turnover issues, but they finally grabbed control of the game. With Kosmides winning nearly every draw, the game turned into a make-it-take-it scenario, and the Eastern lead grew to 7-1 before the Highlanders struck again at the midway point of the first half.
Kosmides answered that goal with two more and
Sabrina Campbell tagged an upper corner for a 10-2 lead with ten minutes to play in the first half.
Molly Dowling scored the first goal of her college career for a 12-2 lead with seven minutes to play in the period. After the Highlanders scored to stop the clock,
Allison Andres depositted her first goal of the year to restore the ten-goal edge.
The Eagles added six more goals int he second half. Dix,
Stephanie Arnold and
Caitlyn Quizon each scored three times in the contest. Quizon, who has had practice time limited by injury, did not start but made an immediate impact off the bench. The rookie attack put five hard shots at goal. She scored three times, had one shot saved with a kick, and banged her fifth shot off the bottom of the left post. She and Arnold each grabbed two draw controls.
Sabrnina Campbell and
Michelle Martin joined Dowling and Andres with single tallies.
Libby Daniskas made eight saves to pick up the win in her college debut.

The Eagles are at Elizabethtown College next Saturday.
