Women's Basketball Stumbles at Home Against Devils

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball rallied from an 11-point deficit to tie the game late, but the visiting FDU-Florham Devils found just enough offense to earn a 64-61 win. The Eagles shot just 19-of-70 from the floor (27.1 %) in the loss.

How It Happened:
The Eagles (12-10, 7-4 MAC Freedom) trailed 45-34 with three minutes to go in the third period. Viki Kneis started the Eastern rally with a three-point basket on a pass from Jaelyn Harris. While the Devils answered with a pair of Jenna Roman free throws, Minka Glenn hit a 3-pointer to bring the Eagles to within seven with ten minutes to play.

The Devils (5-17, 3-8 MAC Freedom) scored inside to start the fourth before Kay Wulah began to take over. The rookie forward scored inside and then made seven free throws in a row to pull the Eagles to within a basket at 51-49. Da'Naziah Brown then stole an inbounds pass and converted a lay-up to tie the score at 51-51 with three and a half minutes to play.

FDU then put together a quick 7-0 run sparked by an Angela Downey 3-pointer from the corner. Jaelyn Harris and Glenn hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Eagles to within a point with a minute to play, but the Devils were able to make their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the three-point win.

The Eagles started out well enough. With seven points and seven rebounds from Kay Wulah, they built a 19-8 lead after one period. While the Eagles shot 6-of-17 from the floor with seven offensive rebounds, they were picking up fouls at an alarming rate at the other end. The Devils reached the bonus early but missed 7-of-11 attempts from the line.

While the Eagles held the lead at halftime, the second quarter was a period of missed opportunities. Eastern hit only 3-of-18 (16.7%) from the floor and shot only two free throws in the frame. The Devils cut the deficit to 27-22 at the half.

The Devils started the second half on an 11-to-0 run. Glenn finally stopped the run with a transition basket from Da"naziah Brown, but the FDU lead grew to 45-34 with less than three minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Devils made 21-of 32 foul shots in the game. and hit seven 3-pointers. The Eagles grabbed 20 offensive rebounds but only held a 13-11 edge in second chance points.

Wulah finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Glenn had 13 points off the bench and Jaelyn Harris finished with 11. She made a pair of 3-pointers in the game to become the program single-season record holder in that category.

Roman was 10-of-15 from the foul line and finished with a game-high 21 points. Helen Ishmael had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Coach Houston Says:
"This was a tough lost at home. We had too many bad positions without producing on both ends. We helped them out by fouling and given them chances at the line and did not put together a complete game. Their team has been in all their games recently and they got King's on Saturday and they got us today. Saturday is a huge game for us. We will be ready to go."

Up Next:
The Eagles can secure a spot in the MAC Freedom standings with a win at Stevens on Saturday. They wrap up the year with a pair of games against the top two seed in the top two teams in the league.
