Cold Spell Undoes Women's Hoops at Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J.– Cold Weather returned the Mid-Atlantic region today. Eastern University Women's Basketball hit a cold spell shooting the ball and fell 73-49 at Stevens in a game with post-season implications. The Eagles (12-11, 7-5 MAC Freedom) could have locked up a post-season bid with a win, but they hit just 1-for-15 from behind the arc and shot only 18-of-62 from the floor in the loss. Kay Wulah and Viki Kneis each finished with 13 points.

How It Happened:
The Eagles stayed in the game through halftime in part by making free throws. Eastern shot just 9-of-29 from the floor but had five different players make at least one free throw before intermission. The Ducks got three first-half 3-pointers from Emily Nunez on the way to a 33-28 lead.

Stevens (9-14, 6-6) built the lead to 44-30 midway through the third before the Eagles put together a 6-to-0 burst to close the gap to eight points. Kneis had a pair of lay-ups in the run. Stevens answered the run with five quick points and the Eagles were only able to muster a pair of Da'Naziah Brown free throws in the final two minutes of the quarter.

The Eagles were never able to pull the game back to single-digits and the Ducks hit shots to pull away. With the 24-point final margin, the Ducks pick up a critical tiebreaker in the race for the post-season.

The Eagles can claim a spot in the post season with a win at DeSales on Tuesday, a win at home against Misericordia next Saturday, or if King's beats Stevens in Hoboken next Saturday. If the Eagles do not pick up a win and Stevens beats King's and loses at FDU-Florham, then the Ducks will be the four seed by virtue of point-differential in head to head match-ups. If both teams finish 8-6, then Eastern will get the spot based on a win against a top-two team. If both finish 7-7 and Stevens gets there with a win against FDU-Florham, then Eastern's win at King's will be the deciding facotr.

Coach Houston Says:
"We did not shoot the ball well tonight. We hit an offensive funk, but our defense is the key and we could not get stops or create chances with our defense. We control our destiny in this and we need to be ready for DeSales on Tuesday. It will be another tough road test."

Up Next:
The Eagles are at DeSales on Tuesday at 8:00 pm. The Bulldogs have won ten games in a row and sit atop the conference standings. They won by 28 at second-place Misericordia today. In their first match-up with DeSales, the Eagles had three shots on the final possession, but lost 59-57.
