Field Hockey Falls to Haverford

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey (2-2) scored in the third minute, and led 1-0 at halftime, but the high-scoring Haverford College Ford offense found three goals in the second half to earn a 3-2 win. All five goals in the game came on special situations. Both teams scored twice on penalty corners and the visiting Fords converted on a penalty stroke.

How It Happened:
Haverford (4-0) came into the match ranked nationally in goals per game. The Fords had 17 goals through three games and had only given up a pair.

As they have in each of their four matches this year, the Eagles found an early goal. In the third minute, Joelle Wash banged home her second of the year on a perfect insert from Harper Sellers. The Eagles controlled field position and possession for for much of the remainder of the quarter and had a great chance to double the lead in the 14th minute, but Haverford goalie Sunny Truslow made consecutive saves on close-range efforts from Wash and Abigail Geisler.

As play progressed through the second quarter, the Fords gained the edge in possession. That edge resulted in five penalty corners in the period. The Eagles bravely defended all five. The guests had their best chance on the third, but Lily White turned away a strong strike from close range with a defensive save.

Haverford had a 3-0 edge in shots in the second.

The Eagles started the third on the defensive as well, and the Fords found the equalizer on a volley of a ball in tight on a penalty corner.

Play evened out through the remainder of the the third, but the Fords continued to have the edge in field position.

Haverford earned a penalty corner in the 54th minute and grabbed the lead on a beautiful redirection of a blast from the top of the circle. thirty seconds later, they doubled their edge after a penalty stroke call in the box.

Down 3-1, the Eagles pushed into the Haverford end and earned a pair of late penalty corners. On the second one, Geisler popped home a rebound on her own shot to pull the Eagles to within a goal with nearly three minutes to play. The Fords were able to keep the ball out of their own circle for the rest of the match.

The win was the 100th career victory for Haverford Head Coach Jackie Cox.

Coach Azzarano Says:
"We will spend the week really working on team play. We have a lot of talented and strong players. We are working through some kinks in positioning to figure out how we can better compete. The team is working very hard, but we need to add smart team play to be able to balance the load in each game."

"These tough non-conference games are just what we need to improve our team and our game-plan heading into conference play."

Up Next:
The Eagles have a week before they play again. They are on the road at Stockton next Saturday.
