GALLOWAY, N.J.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 2-1 decision on the road against the unbeaten Stockton University Ospreys (5-0). For the Eagles, the loss is the third straight to a team without a loss.
How It Happened:
The Ospreys scored on the only shot of the opening quarter. The officials called a penalty stroke early in the 12th minute, and Stockton's Gianna Morganti converted. Stockton had a 2-1 edge in penalty corners in the first quarter.
The Eagles carried the play in the start of the second quarter and drew level on a penalty corner goal in the 26th minute.
Harper Sellers tipped in a pass from
Ali Balmer to tie the match. Just over a minute later, however, the Ospreys drew level on their only shot of the second quarter. A redirection in front of the net put Stockton up 2-1 at the half.
The Eagles put pressure on the Stockton goal for the entire second half, but the equalizer did not come. The Eagles had nine penalty corners after halftime and Stockton's only two penalty corners came late int eh fourth quarter. The Eagles had a final chance on their 11th corner of the match as time expired, but they were not able to force overtime.
Coach Azzarano Says:
"After a week full of hard work, preparation, and practice we are definitely disappointed we were not able to find the equalizer goal to push today's game at least to overtime."
"Much of what we worked on and the adjustments made over the week were seen as positive growth for the team as a whole. We need to continue to improve our individual skills on both the offensive and defensive ends. Stockton did a very nice job of exploiting those times when we were not as tight with our ball control as we need to be."
"An unfortunate stroke call put us in a hole early, though we are proud of the fight and determination we showed as we were able to control significant possession in the second half of the game. We were able to pressure well on offense and earned a penalty corner with 4.6 seconds left to play. Our goal will be to finish on these opportunities. We believe we will do exactly that as we continue to grow and gain experience."
"We are keeping our heads high and focusing on aspects that are good as we prepare for a quicker recovery with Wesley on Tuesday."
