ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer gave up a goal in each half and was unable to find the back of the net in a 2-0 home loss to the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen (3-4).
How It Happened:
The Eagles had the first really good chance of the match on a close angle shot from
Nicole Weenink in the seventh minute, but Lebanon Valley goalkeeper Serena Donmoyer made the save. Eight minutes later,
Casey Avello hit a shot from distance that slipped just over the bar.
The good pressure early did not turn into a goal and LVC was able to convert on a chance against the run of play in the 25th minute. After an Eastern turnover in the defensive half, Lucy McGloshen took a shot on a breakaway attempt.
Grace Schreckengast read the play well and turned the shot away. The rebound caromed toward midfield. LVC's Lindsey Topper beat everyone to the ball and floated a thirty yard shot into the top of the open net.
Zoe Galvin had a chance to equalize from the top of the box, but her shot slid just wide of the upper right corner of the goal and LVC had a 1-0 lead at half.
After the break, the Eagles again had a great chance as Avello drove central with a dribble from the left side and slipped a pass toward the penalty spot. Corrine Vecchione beat a charging Donmoyer to the ball, but her shot rolled just wide of the left upright and LVC held the 1-0 lead.
The Dutchmen scored the all-important second goal early in the 64th minutes. Again, the Eagles got caught leaning forward on a turnover in the back. McGloshen picked up the ball and guided it forward behind the Eastern back row. Bridget Finn won the race to the ball and put away her fourth goal of the year.
Down 2-0, the Eagles were unable to generate the chances to mount a comeback. Next fall, with MAC realignment, Eastern and LVC will be conference opponents.
Coach Stueck Says:
"We battled hard today, but unfortunately allowed too many chances against a quality opponent. At this point in the season, we are still allowing too many breakaways, shots, and corner kicks. We will focus on this over next week."
"At times we played some very good soccer, and created a number of quality chances in front of goal. Unfortunately, we were unable as a team to seize our chances today. It is important for us to stick together and stay positive as we have some big games ahead of us."
