Galvin Blast Lifts Women's Soccer Past Catholic

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer put together a complete performance to earn a tough 1-0 win over the visiting Catholic University Cardinals in a final tune-up leading into Saturday's MAC Freedom opener. Zoe Galvin scored the game's only goal on a beautiful solo effort in the 35th minute.

How It Happened:
After dropping a 2-0 decision on Saturday, the Eagles made some changes coming into today's match. Those changes seemed to have an impact early as the Eagles were able to generate shots and corners through the first half. Nicole Weenink had a shot from in close in the second minute on a cross from Casey Avello. The Catholic goalkeeper parried the ball around the post for the first of six first-half corner kicks. The eagles would finish with a 9-2 edge in corners in the match.

With Weenink putting pressure on the back row, the Eastern midfield was able to pick up short clears and maintain possession. The Changing moment in the match came on a short clear that Galvin gathered. She won a loose ball and fed Amy Radcliffe to her right. Radcliffe played a ball into Katerina Mouzakitis with a defender on her back. the sophomore forward played out of pressure to Galvin who created space before playing a little combination ball with Corinne Vecchione. After getting the return pass, Galvin did the work to free herself from a pair of defenders and fired an 18-yard shot into the top of the net. She now has four goals on the season.

The Eagles (5-4) continued to press and had chances in the waning moments of the first half and early in the second.

As the second half wore on, the Cardinals (4-5-2) grabbed the game and put the Eastern defense under pressure. Lindsay Kline and Carli Sitkowski limited the close shots in front and Kerry Phillips was able to clear balls from danger with her long distribution. The Eagles survived the onslaught of pressure and were able to close out the match with possession.

Both teams ended the match with 13 shots. Grace Schreckengast made two saves inthe first half and Phillips made three in the second half to earn the shutout.

Coach Stueck Says:
"This was our most complete game of the season. Our possession in the first half was superb, and as a team we really set the tone with our work-rate and competitive spirit."

"We were focused on allowing less corner kicks, shots, and quality chances. It takes an entire team to get a shutout, and I'm very proud we achieved it against a strong Catholic side."

"I could name a whole host of Eagles who rose to the occasion today. Zoe Galvin continues to provide moments of magic, and both Lindsay Kline and Amy Radcliffe responded seamlessly to new roles."
