WILKES-BARRE, Pa.–
Nicole Weenink scored the only goal of the match int he the 83rd minute to lift Eastern University Women's Soccer (6-4, 1-0) to an important MAC Freedom win at King's College (5-5-1, 0-1).
How It Happened:
In a game played largely between the two boxes, neither team had many great chances at goal. Eastern held a 3-1 edge in first half shots, but the host Monarchs had the only shot on goal in the half.
The Second half did not yield many more chances. The Eagles had the only two corner kicks of the match after half, but it was the Monarchs who had the first three shots on goal after half.
Kerry Phillips made three of her four saves after halftime.
As the game moved toward its end, the Eagles found a difference-making moment. After a great passing sequence just missed, the Eagles won a King's goal kick in the midfield,
Casey Avello guided a ball into space on the left side. Weenink beat her mark to the ball and cut toward goal. She pushed a right footed shot inside the far post for her fifth goal of the year.
The Eagles did not allow a King's chance in the final six minutes to secure the important league win.
Coach Stueck Says:
"It's not easy to pick up conference wins on the road. We would like to continue to improve our quality in possession, yet I'm extremely proud of our effort and commitment to defend. We have been focused on allowing less chances, and two straight shutouts was a terrific response this week."
"Having someone like Nicole on your team gives you the chance to win any game you play. She proved that once again today."
"The entire team has been focused on a championship mentality. Our trainings have been intense, reserves have been constantly pushing starters to be even better, and today's result is a credit to every player in an Eastern uniform."
