GLASSBORO, N.J.– Eastern University Women's Soccer (6-5) dropped a tough 1-0 decision in cold and rainy conditions at Rowan University. The Profs (5-5-1) scored the only goal of the match int he 52nd minute.
How It Happened:
The hosts had the early play, but momentum shifted in the seventh minute when
Casey Avello played a ball in behind the Rowan back row.
Nicole Weenink beat her mark to the ball, but Rowan goalkeeper Bristol Pizzuto charged off her line and fouled Weenink just outside the box. With no defenders in position to back her up, Pizzuto was sent off for the foul.
On the restart,
Zoe Galvin hit a shot that Rowan's second goalkeeper touched off the crossbar. Several Eastern players had chances at the bouncing ball in the box, but the Profs kept the ball out.
Up a player, the Eagles had more field position and pressure in the first half. The Eagles finished with an 8-5 edge in first half shots.
Rowan scored off a cross from the right side on a ball that skipped into the box.
The Eagles had nine second-half corner kicks but could not convert that pressure into an equalizer.
Kerry Phillips made six of her seven saves in second half.
Coach Stueck Says:
"This is a tough loss to swallow. Nicole did an excellent job to draw the red card, but once we were up a girl we need to capitalize. Soccer can be a funny game. Goals are hard to come by, but as a staff and team we failed to get the job done tonight."
"I believe we will learn from this loss and come out even hungrier in our next conference game to prove we are a championship caliber team."
