Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Claims Draw Against DeSales

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– With a nice Homecoming crowd in attendance, Eastern University Women's Soccer earned a 2-2 draw with a DeSales team that entered the match on an eight-game winning streak. All four goals were scored in the second half. Despite losing the statistical battle pretty significantly, the Eagles held a 2-1 with less than ten minutes to play in the match.

How It Happened:
The Bulldogs (10-2-1, 1-0-1) had a 9-2 edge in first-half shots, but neither team really had great chances before the intermission.

After half, the Bulldogs found a goal off the right side in the 53rd minute. With the goal, the Bulldogs found even more offensive aggression. Kerry Phillips made three really strong saves ina  six -minute stretch and it seemed almost certain that the Bulldogs would double their lead.

Soccer, however is a funny game. In the 67th minute, the Eagles (6-5-1, 1-01-) escaped for a little bit and a DeSales foul near midfield gave Eastern what looked to be something less than half a chance to score. Zoe Galvindelivered a long serve into the box and toward the goalkeeper. With the DeSales goalkeeper leaning one way to stop the long ball in, Amy Radcliffe redirected the ball to the opposite post to tie the match.

Five minutes later, Nicole Weenink was able to strip the ball off a DeSales defender and push toward goal. The MAC 200 meter dash champion was not going to be caught. She snuck a peek at the goalie and slipped home her 20th career marker.

Up 2-1, the Eagles had more possession than they did while trailing. The Bulldogs had a couple chances including a point-blank look that went wide in the 82nd minute. The Eagles dodged that bullet, but only a minute later, Tess Rodgers found space in front of the Eastern back row and picked out a corner to tie the score.

The Eagles had a corner kick early in the overtime, but the rest of the chances in the match fell to the visitors. Phillips made two spectacular saves and the Eastern defense scrambled to foil chances through the final fifteen minutes of the match.

The point could prove to be very important in what looks to be a very competitive MAC Freedom race. At this point, conference newcomer Stevens Institute of Technology sits atop the table with a 2-0 mark. Eastern and DeSales are the other two unbeaten teams.

Coach Stueck Says:
"It was great to leave today with a point. Conference games are always a battle, and I was very proud of our teams continued desire to leave everything out on the field."

"As we move forward into future conference games, we will look to allow less shots and chances on goal. Kerry made some special saves to keep the game even."

"I'm very excited to get back to work on Monday. This team is feeling good about themselves, and we have a huge opportunity Tuesday to gain more points in conference."
