DOYLESTOWN, PA.–Eastern University Women's Soccer picked up an important 1-0 win at Delaware Valley University to remain unbeaten in the MAC Freedom.
Zoe Galvin scored the game-winner in the 68th minute.
How It Happened:
With the host Aggies (1-10-1, 0-3) sitting deep and playing for a counter, the Eagles (7-5-1, 2-0-1) had a huge advantage in field position and possession throughout the opening half. While that resulted in a 9-3 edge in shots, the Eagles were not able to create a quality chance in the run of play until the 39th minute and had to settle for restart opportunities.
Even with several free kicks and a trio of corners, the Aggie defense did not break.
Eastern's best chances of the first half actually came after the Aggies had a period of extended possession in and around the Eastern end. With more space available, Galvin finally broke the final line with a nifty set of moves in the middle of the field and a perfectly weighted pass.
Nicole Weenink broke through to meet the pass, but her left-footed effort slipped just wide of the right upright.
Two minutes later, Galvin picked up a short clear and drilled a 25-yard effort over top of the goal. All three DelVal shots in the first half came from long distance.
The Eagles had three of their five second-half corners in the opening 15 minutes, but the Aggies defended set pieces with numbers and courage and the Eagles did not score.
Eastern finally broke through after Weenink won the ball on the left side about thirty-five yards from the endline. She turned and attacked on the dribble. With two players marked in deep positions in the box, Weenink cut a left-footed serve back toward the top of the box. Galvin arrived out of the midfield and slipped a right-footed shot just under the bar for her fifth goal of the season. This goal is her fourth game-winner of the year.
The Eastern defense, led by center backs
Carli Sitkowski and
Lindsay Kline kept the Aggies away from goal for the remainder of the day.
Kerry Phillips was credited with four saves in the win. The Eagles had a 16-5 edge in shots for the match.
With both Stevens and DeSales winning tonight, the Eagles stay in a tie for second in the MAC Freedom.
Coach Stueck Says:
"Delaware Valley was committed to their plan and made things difficult. Nicole made a big play to create the chance and Zoe put it away. That one minute of quality can be all the difference in this game."
"Road wins in the league are really valuable. These three points are very important for us to be able to get where we want to be by the end of the year. We have another important road test on Saturday."
