EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in an important MAC Freedom match at Wilkes. The host Colonels scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute and earned the win in the 108th minute.
Nicole Weenink scored both Eastern goals in the first half.
How It Happened:
The Colonels grabbed the lead in the ninth minute, but the Eagles grabbed one back int he 21st minute. Carli Stikowski served a ball from near midfield into the box. Weenink battled for the ball and pushed it away from her mark. She wound up at tight angle to the right of the goal. She fired a high shot that beat the keeper at the near post.
Eight minutes later, the Eagles had back-to-back corner kicks.
Casey Avello fired a header that missed just wide. After the Colonels (5-6-1, 2-2) cleared the zone,
Jenna Linstra served a ball into the attacking end that Weenink again won. She cut her dribble inside and ripped a right-footed shot inside the far post for her eighth goal of the year.
The Eagles had a 10-6 edge in first-half shots. Eastern had a fair amount of possession in the second half, but Wilkes found the equalizer on a cross for the right side. After an even first overtime, the Colonels had more pressure in the second. The Eagles got caught in their end, and Wilkes took advantage of a short clear for the game-winner.
Coach Stueck Says:
"I continue to be proud of the way we battle and compete. Soccer can be a cruel, unforgiving game some days. We did not deserve to lose today, but how we respond moving forward will show a lot about our character."
