Volleyball Outpaces Marywood to Open at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball hit .270 as a team and pulled away to an efficient three-set with over the Marywood University Pacers (8-8) in the opening match of the Elizabethtown College Invitational. Cecila Bauer picked up 12 digs to reach 1000 for her career.

How It Happened:
After the two sides traded points early, the Eagles grabbed control of the opening set near the midpoint. After Caroline Shelby pounded home a kill to tie the set at 10-10, Ally Spillane delivered an ace and Hannah Picconi put down a kill to put the Eagles up 12-10. The teams traded sideouts again before Shelby served for a pair of points for a 16-12 edge.

On a couple occasions, the Pacers closed the gap to two points, but the Eagles used tough serving to gain the advantage and pulled away toa  25-21 win. Six different Eastern players recorded kills and three different players served for aces in the opening set.

Spillane served the Eagles to a 4-0 lead to start the second set. The Eastern lead stood at 16-9 when Morgan Kline went back to serve for her second time in the set. Eastern's senior setter served for five points and the Eagles held the lead to take a 25-16 win in the second set. Bauer and Picconi delivered the final two kills of the second set.

The Eagles hit .283 with 17 kills to win the final set 25-14. Though the Pacers were able to dig a lot of balls in the set, they were unable to convert the digs into dangerous swings and the Eagles were ultimately able to to finish points. Shelby had seven kills in the final set.

Picconi hit .727 and registered a career-best eight kills. She also added three blocks. Bauer's 12 digs led the Eagles. Shelby added 15 kills and ten digs, Spillane had ten kills on only 18 swings, and Kylie McCusker had 24 assists.

Coach Birtwistle Says:
"Congrats to Cecilia on an amazing accomplishment. A thousand digs is a major milestone. Caroline and Ally secured the majority of our offense tonight but I was happy with our middles. They were both effective and efficient. Hannah had her best match of her early career."
