ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Volleyball earned a split in two matches on the second day of the Elizabethtown College Invitational. After falling to a very good Baldwin-Wallace (17-1) team in three sets int he morning match, the Eagles bounced back to be the host Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (15-5) in four sets in the noon match.
Caroline Shelby had twenty kills and 15 digs in the final match. She was named to the all-tournament team.
How It Happened:
The Eagles (10-7) trailed 23-21 in the opening set, but they earned a sideout on a tip from
Kylie McCusker and reeled off three more points on
Ashley Thorsted's serve to take the opening set 25-23. After dropping the second set 25-22, the Eagles again erased a 23-21 edge in the third set. Down 24-23, Shelby socred the point on the sideout with a back-row attack and
Ally Spillane and
Ally Montour combined for a block to give the Eagles a 25-24 edge before
Katie Stenby delivered an ace to put the Eaglesup 2-1 in the match.
The Eagles ran off six points in a row on Stenby's serve to grab a 14-9 lead in the decisive fourth set. The Blue Jays closed the gap to 15-14 with a run of their own, but Cecila Bauer stopped the run with a kill for a sideout and then served for three points to give the Eagles a 19-14 edge. Bauer had a double-double in the match with 12 kills and a career-best 32 digs. She is the first Eastern player to get over 30 digs in a match since
Rylie Haas did it in 2013.
The Eagles were able to sideout effectively to close the match. Eastern hit .302 in the final set. Stenby added 21 digs. THorsted had 24 assists and McCusker had 22.
The Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets brought a very efficient offence in the opening match. They hit .378 in the match and were very efficient in the sideout game. Shelby finished with eight kills. Bauer had five kills and a team-high 12 digs.

"Baldwin-Wallace was a really solid team that had a little too much firepower for us this morning. Our energy was good but they had us chasing from the beginning."
"The E-town game was a good rebound game. We came out with good energy and effort against a team that had beaten some teams we lost to earlier. Our senior passers got us into good rhythm and eventually it was our defense that helped us pull out the win."

The Eagles are back into MAC Freedom play on Wednesday at King's College. The Monarchs are 12-2 overall. They split their opening two matches in the league.
