DOVER, Del.–
Zoe Galvin scored once in regulation and again in overtime as Eastern University Women's Soccer (3-2) outlasted the host Wesley College Wolverines, 2-1, in a night game on Drass Field. The win comes in the first meeting between the two programs since 2006.
How It Happened:
While the Wolverines had a 5-2 edge in first-half shots, the Eagles had extended periods of positive possession in the attacking third. Eastern (3-2) was able to capitalize in one of those periods in the 16th minute.
Casey Avello looked for shooting opportunities in the box but found nowhere to turn. She instead dropped a pass to Galvin standing thirty yards from the endline. The senior midfielder cleaned up the pass, pushed it onto her right foot, and smacked a hard shot to the upper left corner of the goal.
The Eastern lead lasted until the 84th minute. The Wolverines had five second-half shots and two of them came on the game-tying effort. Emily Caldarelli hit a shot off the post and followed in the rebound to tie the match.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Eagles started the second overtime with great energy going forward. In the 103rd minute,
Lydia Moody clipped a long serve into the attacking end from the left side and Galvin brought it down. With defenders closing in on all sides, Galvin needed to find free space. After a couple quick moves, she was able to open up some space for a right-footed shot from 25 yards out. Her blast slipped under the crossbar for the win and her third goal of the fall.
Coach Stueck Says:
"We played some really good soccer today. At times our possession was as good as it has been all season. As a team, we need to recognize winning moments and finish games. That goal near the end of regulation was disappointing. Our response in overtime was excellent."
"Zoe was the team hero today. That was an unreal goal to win it."
