Bats Quiet as Baseball Drops Two to FDU

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Baseball came into today's home doubleheader with FDU-Florham on a four-game winning streak. The Eastern hitters managed only seven hits and three runs as the Eagles dropped both ends of the twin-bill. The Eagles dropped the opener 6-1 and fell 4-2 in the nightcap.

How It Happened:
Mickey Foytik was dominant through five and two thirds. A one-out seeing-eye single in the sixth did not figure to be a problem when Foytik got a ground ball to second to retire the next hitter. The Devils sent the runner to stay out of the double play, and that decision madea  huge difference. Foytik walked the next two hitters on pitches around the zone to load the bases.

Even then, Foytik seemed to be in command when he jumped ahead 0-2 on the next hitter. His next pitch, a fastball off the inside corner, hit the pinch-hitter and drove in the first run of the game. A failed pick-off attempt gave the Devils a two-run lead. The inning then broke down completely with a three-run homer and two more hits for a 6-0 lead.

The Devils (10-15 4-8 MAC Freedom) had just one hard-hit base hit before the sixth. The Eagles grabbed a run back in the bottom of the frame when Liam Clarke doubled to the fence in left, but it was not enough. Eastern had only four hits in the opener.

Jake Breyer got out a single in the first inning of game two with a double-play and the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the first. Shane Albertson laced a double down the line to drive in Jordan Laboy who had singled to lead off the inning. Liam Clarke eventually scored on a fielding error for a 2-0 lead. The Eagles loaded the bases with a walk and a Luke Gruendl single. Brad Clemens nearly beat out a chopper for an infield hit, but the sophomore shortstop was a half step late and the rally died. The Eagles (8-17, 4-7 MAC Freedom) did not get another hit in the game.

The Devils answered with three in the top of the second. After a lead-off single rolled through the right side, Breyer got the next two men out. A walk and a two-out double tied the score. Another double put FDU up 3-2. Breyer got the next hitter, but the damage was done.

The Devils picked up an insurance run on a base-running play in the sixth. The Eagles had two on with one out in the seventh, but there would be no miracle comeback.

Coach Renauro Says:
"Pitching held us into both games, but unfortunately hitters didn't make the adjustments needed to win. I think we had 19 fly outs. It's hard to be successful when you set your sights up. We will be working hard this week to quiet our approaches at the plate. Mickey and Breyer both had quality starts against a good fastball hitting team."

Up Next:
The Eagles host Marywood on Wednesday before a four-game weekend. They will play the Del Val series Friday and Saturday and will host Manhattanville in the final game of that series on Sunday.
