DOYLESTOWN, Pa.–
Mackenzie Dix scored with 23 seconds left and the defense held up as Eastern Univeristy Women's Lacrosse earned a 25-24 win at Delaware Valley University. With the win, the Eagles keep hope alive for a bid in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament. If the Eagles (4-9, 3-3 MAC Freedom) beat DeSales on Saturday, they will earn a spot in the tournament.
Sabrina Campbell had eight goals and two assists and
Meghan Kosmides scored seven times and corralled 15 draw controls.
How It Happened:
Only one time in the first half did the game go more than three and a half minutes without a goal being scored.
The Eagles scored the first four goals of the game.
Carly Burns scored twice,
Jessica Ketscheck scored from Campbell and
Claudia Glover made it 4-0 only 3:25 into the game. The Aggies then answered with five goals in a row. Claire Gamach scored the first three goals and Amanda McKeegan put the Aggies up 5-4 with 19-10 to play in the first half.
Burns completed her hat trick off another feed from Campbell to tie the game and Campbell and Kosmides tallied before the midpoint of the first half. Del Val answered with another four-goal burst.
Dix and Campbell scored less than a minute apart to tie the game at 9-9 before Gamache scored two more goals for an 11-9 Aggie lead with five minutes to play. In the final three minutes, the Eagles scored four times and gave up a goal to lead 13-12 at the break.
Azalea Brown scored her first goal of the season with less than a minute to play, and in a sign of things to come, Dix closed the half with a goal with one second on the clock.
While the Eagles had seven different goal-scorers in the first half, the scoring in the second half went to Kosmides and Campbell in the second. The duo combined for 11 of Eastern's twelve second-half tallies. Neither team led by more than two goals at any point in the second half.
The Aggies led 23-22 with 3:23 on the clock. Kosmides scored to tie it with 3:11 ont he clock and then won a draw and found Campbell for a 24-23 lead with 2:56 on the clock. After Gamache tied it with 2:43 on the clock, the Aggies had a chance to grab the lead.
Stephanie Arnold checked a ball free and Dix picked it up for a posession with less than two minutes to play. The Eagles, however, could not hold for the last shot. After the Aggies stopped penetrating efforts by Campbell and Ksmides,
Allison Andres had the ball below goal-line extended. Dix came into the fan off a screen and caught a perfect pass a few yards in front of the crease. She threw a quick fake and dunked home what would be the game-winner.
The Aggies won the final draw of the game, but were unable to get a shot on frame to tie the game. Eastern had a 41-40 edge in shots and a 34-33 edge in shots on goal.
Coach Campbell Says:
"There were a lot of good things offensively. We were able to score off fast break, slow break, man-up, and on 8-meter shots. We would have liked to possess the ball longer at times. Marcie Spencer came up with some critical saves at the end of the game and Stephanie Druid did very well marking their best player."
"We emained calm under pressure and in some very physical moments of the game. Carly was huge for us to start the game. Having as many goal scorers as we did was important and I think what set us apart in the end. Sabrina and Meg were solid for us in the attacking end. Leas goal at the end of the first was a spark we needed and Mac's goal to take the lead at the end was amazing. Both came out of the offense and are great bits of team play. I got to see some great team lacrosse from my team."
"We will continue to work on our defense's ability to shut down fast break opportunities limited shooting opportunities."
Up Next:
The Eagles are at DeSales on Saturday. That game was originally scheduled for 1:00 but may be moved to noon. DeSales is a game up in the standings, but the Eagles would earn the tiebreaker with a win on Saturday.
