DOYLESTOWN, Pa.– Eastern University Softball continued its time on the road with another away-from-home doubleheader at Delaware Valley University. With field construction complete, the Eagles are waiting for the outfield sod to take and are still playing their home games away. After dropping the opener by a 4-0 score, the Eagles came back with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Sabrina Thomas and
Emily Loomis each knocked in a pair of runs in the win.
How It Happened:
In game two, the Eagles took the early lead with aggressive base-running and a two-out RBI from Thomas in the bottom of the first. Sam Albertson bunted for a hit to start the inning and moved to third ona
Rebecca Howard ground ball to third. Thomas singled up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
Lexi Evelyn worked around a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first and then settled into the game. She gave up a two-out single in the second before striking out the next hitter to retire the side. Evelyn struck out three in four and a third innings to earn the win.
The Eagles opened up their lead with three in the bottom of the third. Howard doubled to left with one out and scored on another two-out single from Thomas.
Taylor Crown singled to right and she and Howard moved into scoring position when
Sami Britton walked. Loomis knicked in her 12th and 13th runs of the year with a single to right.
The four-run lead proved to be enough as Britton came on in relief to pick up her first save of the season. Backed by solid defense, Britton allowed only one hit in two and two thirds innings of relief.
The Eagles managed only three singles in a 4-0 loss in the opener. The game was within reach the whole way as the Aggies (9-21, 3-7 MAC Freedom) scored two in the fourth and did not add on until they scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh.
Coach Birchmeier Says:
"We struggled to make the adjustments to their pitcher's curve and rise in the opener, and we gave some extra outs. We starting figuring her out near the end, but it wasn't soon enough. We had some great bunts that we beat out followed up by some timely hits in game two. All of our RBI's came with two outs. We came up with some big plays in the field behind our pitcher and didn't give them any extra outs. Sami and Lexi pitched some great tag-team games. We are very proud of this split.
Up Next:
The Eagles (6-24, 1-9 MAC Freedom) are at Moravian on Tuesday and will play DeSales on Thursday. That game, if all goes well with grass growing and weather, will be on the new field at Eastern. An official determination will be made in the middle of the week.
