Softball Drops Two at Wesley

DOVER, Del.– With their new field nearing completion back in St. Davids, Eastern University Softball continued its extended road trip in Dover, Del. with a non-league doubleheader at Wesley College The Eagles dropped a pair of run-shortened games to the Wolverines.

How It Happened:
The Eagles started slowly in game one. The Wolverines had four extra-base hits and five runs int he first two innings. The Eastern offense put runners on in the second, third, and fourth innings, but the Wolverines stretched the lead with four runs in the third and another four in the fourth on the way to a 13-0 win.

After the Wolverines scored eight runs in the top of the first, the Eagles scratched back with three runs in the top of the second. After the Sami Britton and Emily Loomis singled, Lexi Evelyn moved the pair along with a sacrifice bunt.

Leah Lozzi then drove a single to center to drive in Britton and move Loomis to third. Jess Snader then executed the second sacrifice bunt of the inning to drive in Loomis and move Lozzi into scoring position. Lozzi scored on Sam Albertson hit a double to right.

After the Wolverines grabbed all three runs back on three hits in the bottom of the second, the Eagles scored a single run on a solo home run from first-year catcher Catelynn Erickson. The home run was the first of her collegiate career.

Eastern scored one more run on a sacrifice fly from Leah Lozzi in the fourth, but the Wolverines scored three more in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead by nine. When the Eagles were unable to plate a runner in the top of the fifth, the game ended with the Wolverines earning the 14-5 win.

Coach Birchmeier Says:
"We slept on them in game one and by the time we woke up it was too late. In game two we started getting our bunts down and moving runners. Catelynn Erickson also had her first collegiate home run. It takes consistent focus starting from the first pitch and I hope we learned our lesson today."

Up Next:
The Eagles are at Delaware Valley on Saturday afternoon for a MAC Freedom doubleheader. If weather cooperates, the hope is to play next Thursday's MAC Freedom doubleheader against DeSales on the new field.
