DALLAS, Pa.– Eastern University Softball continued the season-long road trip with a doubleheader at Misericordia. The Eagles dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker in the opening game before falling in a run-shortened 10-0 game in the nightcap.
How It Happened:
Lexi Evelyn allowed only two Misericordia hits through the first four innings. The Eagles had the best opportunity of the early portion of the game when
Sami Britton capped a seven-pitch at bat with a double to left center with one out in the second.
Taylor Crown lined out to center and Britton was doubled-up on the play.
Britton reached on a single in the fifth. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Crown, but was again caught being a little too aggressive and trying to snag third on the play.
The Cougars scored the first run of the game on a two-out rally in the fifth. After a single up the middle, Amanda Butera tripled to center to drive in the run. Evelyn retired the next hitter to end the inning, but the Eagles were now playing from behind.
Maddie Iswalt singled with one out in the sixth. Maggie Fleming came on to pinch run and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Rebecca Howard, but the Eagles were unable to plate the run. The Cougars (15-7, 4-0 MAC Freedom) doubled their lead on a manufactured run in the sixth, and the Eagles went quietly in the seventh.
The Misericordia offense started game two with a big inning. Six of the seven runs int he inning were unearned after the lead-off hitter reached on an error.
The Eagles could only muster a pair of singles in the 10-0 loss.
Coach Birchmeier Says:
"In the first game we played really well. If we make a few smarter decisions on the base paths and cut off some balls in the outfield, that game goes either way. Lexi pitched a great game. We were able to get bunts down to move runners. We need to get the big hit to score those runners."
Up Next:
The Eagles are at Widener for a Strike Out Cancer doubleheader on Tuesday night.
