How It Happened:
Coming into today, the Fords owned a 7-1 edge in the series between the mainline rivals. In each of the last two years, the Eagles fell in games where they only scored six goals.
Early on, today's game looked like it would be at a different pace. The Eagles jumped to a 4-1 lead in the opening 13:30 of the match.
Antonio Yeoman,
Mark Buannic,
Hassan Mackey and
Colin Piper each scored in the first period. The Eagles scored their four goals on 20 shots. Haverford goalie Dylan Slack made seven of his 15 saves in the first period.
Fechter hit the post up a man early in the second, but the 4-1 score stayed put for the first six minutes of the second quarter.
The game then changed. After an Eastern penalty, the Fords scored an even-strength goal while the Eagles were reorienting to full strength. The Fords cut the Eastern lead to 4-3 before
Trent Ashton answered with his fourth goal of the year to reestablish a two-goal lead with 4:23 left in the half.
Haverford grabbed the ensuing face-off and quickly cut that lead in half. The Fords scored twice more int he half to take a 6-5 lead to the locker room.
The Eagles scored the only goal of the third period on a man-up chance. Haverford regained the lead early in the fourth before Buannic tied the score at 7-7 on a transition feed fromJimy Kurnik with 9:33 to play.
The Eastern defense held solid and gave the offense chances to attack for the lead. That chance finally turned into a game-winner in the waning seconds of regulation. It was Fechter's first goal of the year.
As a group, the Eastern defense caused 15 turnovers.
Chris Durning led the way with four caused turnovers. McDonald had a pair of interceptions to go with his 11 saves.
Coach Wallace Says:
"We missed some big opportunities to put the game away in the first quarter. Their goalie played well, and we took some shots that turned into turnovers. We did not take advantage of their mistakes early on. Once we started to make mistakes and were careless with the ball, they came back and took the lead. We need to avoid the mistakes that lead to scoring chances."
"Our defense was excellent in the second half. Jimmy Kurnik was really good defensively and in transition. Brett made some good saves and some even better plays to help the defense. We held them to one goal in the second half."
"It was good to get the win today, but we know we have things we need to work on. It will be good to be home on Wednesday."
