YORK, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse had a pair of two-goal leads early, but the No. 7 York College Spartans broke the game open with an 8-to-1 third quarter and held on for a an 18-8 win.
How It Happened:
The Eagles scored the first two goals of the game and led 5-3 with six minutes to play in the first half. The Spartans tied the game with goals on back-to-back possessions and took a 6-5 lead into halftime after scoring late in the second quarter.
Trent Ashton put the Eagles up 1-0 in the sixth minute on an unassisted tally.
Hassan Mackey doubled the edge five minutes later. After York tied the game at 2-2 in the 15th minute,
Mark Buannic scored in the closing seconds of the quarter on a feed from
Sam Emig.
In the second quarter, York tied the match after an Eastern turnover, but Buannic put Eastern back up with his second of the day on the ensuing possession. The Eagles doubled their lead on a
Braxton Brent goal from Ashton with six minutes left in the half.
York scored the final three goals of the first half to go to the locker room with a 6-5 lead.
Brett McDonald made ten first-half saves to keep things close.
York dominated at the face-off x in the first half, but the 10-to-3 edge did not show on the scoreboard. That caught up to the Eagles in the third.
York started the half with the ball and up a man. The Spartans scored first and the Eagles answered on an
Antonio Yeoman goal after Ashton jarred a ball loose on a ride. The Spartan attack then kicked into gear with nine goals in a 17 minute stretch going into the fourth.
Eastern finally snapped the York run after a face-off win with eight minutes to play in the fourth. Ashton put away his second of three on the day. He would add another tally late, but it proved to be not enough.
Coach Wallace Says:
"We came out strong and put pressure on them, but at this level the game is about possessions. We were not able to get possessions, and they were able to put together a big run. When we play teams like this, we learn about ourselves and what we need to do to get better."
