ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball saw an early lead evaporate and dropped a 61-54 decision in the annual Battle of Eagle Road match-up against the neighboring Cabrini University Cavaliers. The visitors closed out the game with a 9-to-1 run over the final two minutes to claim the win. This is the fourth year in a row that the visiting team has won the match-up.
Minika Glenn led four Eagles in double-figures with 15 points.
How It Happened:
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-lead to start the game.
Kay Wulah capped the run with her third 3-pointer of the young season. The hot start did not last and the Cavaliers closed the gap to 10-9 before
Brynn Schmidt put away a lay-up on the break to give the Eagles a 12-9 lead going into the second quarter.
The Eagles scored the first five points of the second quarter to rebuild the lead to eight points, but again, the Cavaliers answered. Lexi Edwards made a shot in the pait with two minutes left in the half to put the Cavaliers up 20-19.
Da'Naziah Brown scored the final four Eastern points of the half and the Eagles led 23-22 at the break. Glenn was the only Eastern player with more than a single made field goal in the first half. She led all scorers with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
the game opened up in the third uarter and the Cavaliers found the range with three 3-pointers in the frame. Brown led the Eagles with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Viki Kneis had five points in the quarter, but
Jaelyn Harris was the only other Eagle to mark in the frame and Eastern trailed 38-37 going to the final quarter.
Cabrini shot 8-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-14 from the line in the final period to pull away. The Eagles led 53-52 when Glenn split a pair of free throws with a little more than two minutes on the clock. Cabrini's Lexi Edwards hit a pair of free throws to take the lead and then a three-pointer from the wing to build a four-point edge. In the defensive struggle, that lead seemed bigger than it was.
Jaelyn Harris split a pair a the line to close the gap to 57-54, but the Cavaliers hit their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Jaelyn Harris and Brown each finished with 11 points. Kneis had 10 points and eight rebounds. Wulah had five points and 11 rebounds.
Coach Houston Says:
"We have got some things to work on. We have to do better all around. We need to execute down the stretch. Cabrini capitalized on our mistakes. We have to clean up some things as a unit."
