ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Women's Soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to a Franklin and Marshall team that entered play today on a four-match winning streak. The Diplomats (10-5-1) scored twice int he first half and once in the second to pull away.
How It Happened:
The Eagles had several good chances in the opening moments.
Nicole Weenink earned the edge on the left side and fired a low shot that was knocked out for a corner by F & M goalkeeper Sara Ghorashi. The Eagles had three consecutive corners on the opportunity. Despite good serves, the Diplomat defenders kept the Eagles from getting a quality shot to goal.
With the field stretched, F & M found space to attack and they found their target. Nicolette Runko gathered a pass at the edge of the box and banged in her tenth goal of the season. Runko doubled the Diplomat edge after another Eastern chance in the 44th minute. That goal came after Weenink took a shot from a tough angle that Ghorashi stopped. After a couple quick passes in the back, Runko got behind the Eastern back row and finished with authority to the upper corner.
F &M had an 8-4 edge in first-half shots and a 2-0 edge on the board.
The Diplomats stretched the lead to 3-0 on a shot from the top of the box in the 54th minute.
The Eagles had a couple good second-half chances, including a shot that
Gabrielle Selkirk put toward the upper corner that was parried into the woodwork and a group of free kicks and corners from
Zoe Galvin.
Grace Schreckengast finished with six saves in goal for Eastern.
