SWARTHMORE, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey fell as the host Swarthmore College Garnet scored a pair of first-quarter and held on for a 6-2 win. Abigial Geisler and
Morgan Ruhl scored for the Eagles.
How It Happened:
The Eagles started the game with a pair of good chances on penalty corners and good possession in the attacking zone. The game changed when the Garnet were able to counter and score on a nice reverse-stick effort in the 13th minute. Eighty seconds later, the hosts doubled their lead with a high-hard shot form the top of the circle by Marion Carr. She scored twice on similar shots in the game.
The Eagles settled in and had some good chances in the second quarter as well, but Swarthmore had a period of extended pressure that ended with a rebound goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles finally got on the board early in the second half on a nice drive up the right side.
Ali Balmer poked the initial cross backwards and Geisler knocked in her ninth of the year.
Swarthmore, however, found a goal before the end of the third to restore the three-goal edge with 15 minutes to play.
Only seconds into the fourth,
Jenna Lapp drove up the right side and drove a ball to the back post. Ruhl was in the right spot and tapped in her first collegiate goal. The Garnet again had an answer on another Carr goal and a rebound effort in the waning seconds.
