ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Soccer (2-0) scored four first-half goals and cruised to a 7-1 win in the program's first ever match against the Mount Aloysius Mounties (0-1-1).
Cade Harmon and
Colin Furlong each had two goals in the win.
Fast Start:
Anyone stuck in traffic on the way to the game missed the first goal. After nearly a full minute of productive possession, Samuel Sutherland found space and drove toward the goal. The defender missed his challenge, and the Eagles had a fee kick chance from just outside the box in the second minute. Furlong curled a ball toward the back post and
Cade Harmon converted with a diving header.
Furlong doubled the lead on a blast from thirty yards out in the 13th minute. It was his first goal since Oct. 15, 2016. The 2017 MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the year did not have to wait as long for his next goal. Twenty minutes later, he bent home a free kick from outside the box for a 3-0 lead.
Evan Needs finished the first -half scorer with an absolute stunner. After picking up a loose ball just over 30 yards from goal, the senior forward pushed the ball out of his feet and unleashed a right-footed blast to the upper left corner. Eastern had a 10-4 edge in first-half shots.
Solid Second:
Cade Harmon converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute for his second of the game.
Dennis Cosgrove and
Pascal Verna added goals after the Mounties scored. Both teams had seven second-half shots.
Coach Payne says:
"Our staff asked the players to come out with the same intensity and enthusiasm for the game today as we did for York. We want consistency with our play and effort. It is really hard to be locked in every game and every practice, but this is a demanding program and that is what we ask of our players."
"Colin had a fantastic day. We work on set pieces a lot and he puts extra work in before and after sessions. It showed today. Cade Harmon was very active. He made their center backs work all game. I was impressed at his ability to play in one and two touch and move off the ball. He is most dangerous when he plays this way."
It was great to see Evan Needs have a good day. He has been battling to be at full strength. He was a good presence for us when he was on the field. He showed his maturity as a player and senior. He calms us down and played a great game off the bench today and we were able to play a lot of players today. I was happy for the team as this is always a good thing."
"We definitely still have to improve. I would have liked to dominate the ball a little more in the 2nd half and play more in our opponents half. I wish we created more chances throughout the game. Overall we are very happy with the result and effort. We face two tough opponents this weekend. We are excited to train and prepare over the next four days."
