DOVER, Del.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored early in the second half and made that goal stand in a 1-0 win at Wesley College (4-2).
Alison Hoag scored off a
Joelle Wash feed on a penalty corner in the 39th minute to break a scoreless tie.
Marley Redfield and the Eastern defense did the rest as the Eagles won a 1-0 game for the first time since Oct. 3, 2015.
How it Happened:
In the first half, the Eagles (2-5) had an 11-8 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners, but neither side was able to get on the board.
The Eagles earned their first of seven second half penalty corners shortly after the intermission.
Harper Sellers shot the insert to Wash at the top of the circle. After the initial Wesley defender charged her, Wash passed back toward Hoag who made a quick move toward the middle and guided a shot inside the far post.
Marley Redfield made two of her five saves in the second half.
Jenna Lapp came up with a defensive save to keep the hosts off the board in the twelfth minute of the game.
The History:
Wesley won 2-1 in St. Davids last year. The Wolverines and Eagles met in the PAC playoffs every year between 2001 and 2004. Wesley holds a 12-10 edge in the series.
Coach Azzarano says:
"This was a true hard-fought battle. We had great movement around the field. We need to improve our shooting to capitalize on our corners and possession."
"Jenna Lapp and Moriah Greene stood out on the defensive end. Jenna cleaned up their counter-attacks and was able to help us keep possession and maintain pressure. Mo used her speed to recover time and again. She saved a breakaway chance late in the game."
We are pleased with some of the changes in formation and personnel and feel like we are continuing to show progress. Hoag showed her leadership with a big goal and some clever stick work. She made good decisions on the field and has found good connections."
