EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped its league-opening match at Wilkes University in a rare Saturday evening game. The host Colonels (5-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) scored four times in the final fourteen minutes to pull away to a 6-3 win.
How it Happened:
Wilkes scored in the opening minute to grab the early lead, but
Alison Hoag equalized for the Eagles on a pass from
Ali Balmer in the 20th minute of the match. Hoag scored twice on five shots on the evening. Eastern had a 7-5 edge in first-half shots, but Wilkes goalie Dallas Kendra made four of her five stops int he first half to keep the game level.
Wilkes went up 2-0 ten minutes into the second half. After an Eastern timeout with 15 minutes to play, the Colonels doubled their edge on a shot from a tight angle on the left side.
The game then opened up with four goals in the next seven minutes. The Eagles scored twice in the span, but so did Wilkes. Hoag picked up her eighth of the year off a rebound shortly after the hour mark.
Joelle Wash then answered a Wilkes goal with a blast off a penalty corner.
Hannah Doll picked up the assist on the insert.
Coach Azzarano Says:
"We missed some really good chances and we were too careless in possession. We have to work to get better in both the attack and on defense. We move on."
