ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Lacrosse opened its MAC Freedom schedule with a 17-12 win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies (4-4, 0-1 MAC Freedom).
Meghan Kosmides scored six times to lead the Eastern attack.
The Eagles (3-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom) scored twice in the final minute of the first half to cap a three-goal burst and take the lead for good. The result, however, remained in question until The Eagles scored five goals in a five minute stretch to open up a 17-10 lead with 7:19 to play. Kosmides and
Mackenzie Dix each scored two goals in the burst.
The first goal in the burst came immediately after the Aggies had closed the gap to 12-10 on a free position goal with 12:50 on the clock. Delawre Valley won the draw, but
Julie Haggan picked off a pass to start things going the other way.
Sam Brennan found Kosmides cutting to the goal, and the first year midfielder put away her fifth of the game and 11th of the year.
The Aggies won the next draw as well, but
Marcie Spencer made a save and
Sam Brennan knifed a ball free and picked up the ground ball to start another transition chance.
Sabrina Campbell ran the clear and executed a 4-on-2 break to perfection. The speedy sophomore drew the defense and the goalie and fed Dix who placed the ball into the open goal.
The Aggies again won the draw, but another turnover led to another transition chance and Dix found Kosmides for a 15-10 lead with 10:23 on the clock. Another steal by Haggan led to yet another transition chance. Campbell again found Dix for the finish.
Sam Brennan caused another turnover to st up the final Eastern goal of the game. This time, the Aggies set their defense, but
Liz Brennan found
Allison Andres on the doorstep with 7:19 remaining.
Sam Brennan led the Eagles led the Eastern defense with five caused turnovers and seven ground balls. she also added a pair of assists.
Marcie Spencer made a career-high 16 saves to pick up the win.
Both teams struggled out of the gate offensively and the game was tied at two after 15 minutes. Haggan opened the scoring on a pass from Alex Vincent and Kosmides made it 2-0. When the Aggies scored twice in 23 seconds to tie the game, it started a little offensive outburst with the Eagles answering with two goals in another 30 second burst. Haggan scored the first off the draw control and Dix put away her first of the day 30 seconds later.
After the Aggies scored the next three goals of the game to grab a 5-4 lead with eight minutes to play. Kosmides tied the game with five minutes to play before Brennan scored the final two goals of the half in the final minute.
That two-goal edge held until the decisive run of the game.
The Eagles won only 13-of-31 draws in the game, but big saves from Spencer and several key caused turnovers in the second half enable the team to have more of the ball in good situations. The Aggies finished the game with a 42-33 edge in shots.
Eastern returns to action at Misericordia on Wednesday.
