LANGHORNE, Pa.– On a cold, wet and gray day at Cairn University, Eastern University Baseball (6-11)scored in five of the first six innings, but the host Highlanders took advantage of wet conditions for a four-run fourth and emerged with a 9-6 win.
Timmy Gorton finished with three hits and a pair of RBI's in the the loss.
Andrew Behnam worked through the first three innings with just a single run allowed. The junior held a 5-1 lead when he took the mound for the fourth. He struck out the first batter of the inning before a high fly ball to left carried over the fence just inside the foul pole for a home run. The Highlanders put a pair of runners on with ground ball hits and then took advantage of back-to-back errors and a hit batsman to tie the game.
The Eagles, who had scored in each of the first four innings, did not score in the top of the fifth and fell behind when the Highlanders plated a run on a walk, a pair of wild pitches and a ground ball out in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles plated a single run on a Zach Belansek sacrifice fly in the sixth to tie the game, but Cairn (11-6) plated a pair of two-out runs on a bases loaded single in the bottom of the sixth.
With the sky darkening as the day progressed, hitting became even more of a challenge. The Eagles put runners on in the seventh and eighth, but could not score again.
Ian Roth threw a scoreless seventh inning.
Eastern's best chance at a big inning came in the first. The Eagles loaded the bases and had two runners in with one out, but a short fly ball and a strikeout ended the rally.
The Eagles are slated to play tomorrow against Penn State Brandywine before starting an important weekend series against Misericordia.
