Baseball Falls to Misericordia at Home

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball matched the visiting Misericordia Cougars with 12 hits, but the the guests pulled away to an 8-4 win with multi-run innings in the fifth and the sixth. Timmy Gorton led the Eagles with threats.

The Cougars scored their first run of the game in the first on a bases loaded balk, but the Eagles answered with two runs on three hits off Misericordia starter Ian McCole. Freddy Yahn and Brad Clemens each came through with two-out RBI singles.

The Cougars scratched out a single run in the second to tie the game. The damage could have been worse, but the Eastern defense cut down a runner trying to score from first on a double to end the inning. Liam Clarke took the ball off the wall and hit Zach Belansek in short left field. Belansek's through to the plate hit Gorton in a perfect spot to apply the tag.

After the Cougars took the lead with a  single run in the third, and stretched it out with two more in the fifth, the Eagles had a great opportunity when they loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning, but McCole escaped without giving up a run. The Cougars stretched the lead further with three runs in the sixth.

After the Eagles plated two in the sixth, Tommy Strazza faced only ten batters in throwing three scoreless innings to close out the game. The Eagles, however, were not able to find another run to close the gap further.

The Eagles (6-12, 1-6) will conclude the series with a doubleheader at Misericordia tomorrow.
