EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Lacrosse scored 11 of the 13 second-half goals to pull away to 17-9 MAC Freedom win at Wilkes University. The Eagles (6-6, 4-1 MAC Freedom) took another important step toward returning to the MAC Freedom Tournament with the win.
Liz Brennan and
Meghan Kosmides each scored five goals in the in.
The host Colonels (3-11, 0-5 MAC Freedom) scored in the waning seconds of the first half to grab a 7-6 lead.
Julie Haggan tied the game in the early moments of the second to spark a four-goal burst.
Sabrina Campbell scored twice in the run as Eastern led 10-7 with 20 minutes to play. The Colonels scored a single goal before Kosmides scored two in a row and
Julie Haggan added her 30th of the year to put the Eagles up 13-8.
Allison Andres had two of her three assists in the flurry. Haggan, who finished with two goals and two assists now sits at 199 points for her career. With her next point, she will become the first player in program history with 200 points and 200 draw controls.
"We talked about taking care of the ball and making smart decisions," Head Coach
Kim Campbell said of her halftime talk. "We were not patient in the first half. We did a lot better seeing the doubles and moving the ball in the second half."
The Eagles continued their second-half domination with four more goals.
"We were able to work longer possessions," Campbell concluded. "It was also really good to have other goal scorers step up. Jazz [
Jazzlyn Sullivan] and Sab [
Sabrina Campbell], and Mac [
Mackenzie Dix] scoring early goals gives more space for Julie, Liz, and Meghan. The longer possessions also allowed our defense to be stronger when they had to play.
Marcie Spencer made some big saves,
Sam Brennan and
Alex Imperatore were really solid on their big goal scorers."
Even int he win, the Eagles, according to Campbell, have some important things to work on. Among the most important is converting on free position attempts. The Eagles were only 4-of-16 from the eight-meter line. Eastern had a 46-24 edge in shots and a 36-15 advantage in shots on goal.
In addition to her five goals, Kosmides had six draw controls, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers.
Sam Brennan and
Sabrina Campbell each had seven ground balls.
The Eagles are at FDU-Florham on Tuesday.
