Baseball Slips Past Dolphins

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the first meeting between the two programs, Eastern University Baseball beat the visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins, 4-2. Freddy Yahn drove in three runs, including two on a two-out double in the fifth to put the Eagles up 4-2.

Eastern starter Steve Sattanino allowed only two hits in five scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate win. The freshman struck out three, but needed some help from his defense to escape an early jam. He walked the first two batters of the game, but Zach Belansek and Tommy Strazza turned a 6-4-3 double play to turn the momentum in the inning.

While the Eagles did not score until the fourth, there was an offensive highlight in the opening inning. Timmy Gorton lashed an outside pitch into left field for his 200th career hit. He is the first player in program history to reach that milestone. He had two hits, a walk, and reached on an error on a well-hit line-drive to right field. Zach Belansek had three hits in the leadoff spot.

While Gorton and Belansek reached base, Eastern's first runs of the game came from the bottom half of the order. Strazza doubled to start the fourth. He scored on an error. Moments later, Craig Stanley scored on a Yahn ground out. Strazza and Stanley also reached in the fifth. The two seniors reached on infield singles, and stayed ton first and second when Britton Lawrence flied out. Yahn, hitting in the eighth spot in the order delivered a double to put the Eagles up 4-0.

"Tommy had a huge day for us," Head Coach Jed Morris said of his senior second baseman. "We need to have that balance in our line-up to keep things moving. He had three hits and scored twice. It was also good to see Steve and Nick throwing well.

The Dolphins plated one run off Nick Kosenske in the seventh and another off Jarrid Kosa in the eighth before Justin Fredericks pitched the ninth to pick up the save. Fredericks got a key ground ball  with the bases loaded for a double-play to end the game. Strazza's throw went wild on the turn, but the base umpire ruled that the baserunner's slide was illegal and the runner at first was called out.

The win is the fifth in the last six games for the Eagles (12-15). They start a challenging weekend with a home game against King's on Friday, before playing a pair of road doubleheaders to complete the weekend.
