HAVERFORD, Pa. – Eastern University Softball dropped both ends of today's non-league doubleheader at Haverford College (12-7). The Eagles lost the first game 11-1, and fell in the nightcap by a 10-2 score.
Eastern fell into an early hole in the opener when Haverford's Julia Blake hit a 3-1 pitch out to center for a two-run home run in the first inning. The Fords then tacked on four unearned runs in the second inning.
Madeline Iswalt,
Emily Loomis, and
Taylor Crown all singled in the third, but the Eagles only managed to scored a single run in the inning when
Shelby O'Neill was hit by a pitch. The Fords broke the game open with four runs on three hits in the fourth.
The Eagles had seven hits in the game, but all were singles. Four of Haverford's eight hits in the opener went for extra bases.
Eastern had a chance to grab an early lead with two runners on and only one out in the second.
Jess Snader walked to load the bases.
Taylor Crown fell into an 0-2 hole but fouled off three pitches before flying out on the eighth pitch of her at bat.
That missed opportunity loomed large when the Fords strung together eight singles in the bottom half of the inning to go up 7-0. The hosts tacked on two more runs in the third to lead 9-0.
The Eastern offense finally broke through with runs in the fifth on a
Shelby O'Neill single and a squeeze bunt from
Sabrina Thomas. The Fords won the game after a leadoff triple in the fifth turned into the tenth run.
Leah Lozzi had two of Eastern's four hits int he nightcap.
The Eagles (4-18) are at Delaware Valley on Saturday.
