HAVERFORD, Pa. – On the eve of yet another late-winter storm, Eastern University Baseball used six pitchers and some creative offense to win a 'home game' at Haverford College. With The Yard still oversaturated from Winter Storm Riley, today's game was moved from Eastern to Haverford, but Eastern remained the home team. The Eagles improved to 4-2 on the year with the eight-inning win.
The Fords scored the first run of the game in the third inning off Eastern starter
Tyler Bennett. The freshman southpaw surrendered a leadoff triple and a single to start his third inning of work before getting a pair of fly-ball outs and a strike out to work out of the jam. Bennett allowed four hits and walked three in his four innings of work but used five strikeouts to escape jams and only gave up a single run to earn the win.
The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After
Tyler Stanley reached on an error to start the inning, the first-year center fielder stole second and third to be in scoring position for his older brother to pick up an RBI.
Craig Stanley did just that. The senior left fielder laced a line drive to right to tie the game.
Timmy Gorton then came to the plate and ripped a line drive to the fence in right for his 40th career double.
Craig Stanley scored easily on the play. Gorton scored the final run of the inning on a
Brad Clemens ground out.
"We had some trouble executing in our last couple games in Florida," Eastern Head Coach
Jed Morris said. "Before the game, we talked about executing to create run-scoring chances. It was fun to watch us do that. We still got a couple big hits from Timmy, but we knew if we could get some things going on the bases that those big hits would be worth even more."
Bennett threw a scoreless fourth, and
Jacob Breyer allowed a single hit in pitching a scoreless fifth.
Jarrid Kosa hit a batter in the sixth before retiring the next three Fords he faced.
Brad Clemens then helped create an important insurance run in the sixth. The rookie second baseman singled to right with one out, and stole second and third.
Tommy Strazza hit a medium-depth fly ball to right, but Clemens eluded a tag at the plate with a good slide to put the Eagles up 4-1.
The Fords answered with a run off
Colyn Hoffer in the top of the seventh, and had runners on second and third with one out. Hoffer induced a ground ball to short and Zach Belansek was able to check the runner at third before firing across the diamond to get the important second out of the inning.
Matt Bunjo retired the final batter of the seventh.
Gorton lifted a home run run to right field to drive in
Craig Stanley for the final two runs of the game. With his three RBI's today, Gorton is now within a single run batted in of tying Scott Renauro for the program record.
Bunjo earned the first two outs of the eighth before
Grant Fisher came on to retire what became the final batter of the game.
"Our pitching staff has kept us in games," Morris concluded. "I thought the guys did well again today. Our execution is there, and I feel very good about where our guys are at with their attitudes. We are seeing a lot of good things in terms of how this team is coming together."
Eastern's game against Cabrini which was scheduled for tomorrow is postponed. The Eagles will play again at Stevenson on Saturday.
