ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball generated only eight hits and a single run in dropping both ends of a MAC Freedom doubleheader to the visiting DeSales University Bulldogs (12-9, 6-2 MAC Freedom)
Freshman lefthander
Tyler Bennett put togethe a strong performance in the opener. He scattered five hits and allowed only two runs over 6.2 innings. The visiting Bulldogs scratched for an unearned run in the fifth and got a leadoff homer in the sixth to earn a 2-0 win in the opener. Eastern (6-10, 1-5 MAC Freedom) had only four players reach base against DeSales senior righthander Andrew Schuler who went the distance with a one-hit shutout.
Timmy Gorton recorded the only Eastern hit with a single to the opposite field in the third.
"That guy [Schuler] has always been tough for us to hit." Head Coach
Jed Morris said after the game. "He is a really solid pitcher who throws with a lot of confidence against us. Tyler [Bennett] pitched like he has all year. He only allowe three baserunners through the first four innings and gave us a chance to win. He gave us a really good start today."
The Eagles had nine hits in the nightcap, including three in the first inning, but could only manage a single run. DeSales, meanwhile, scored a single run in the first and then broke the game open with four in the third and three in the fifth on the way to a 10-1 win.
"Our lineup right now," Morris stated. "Is not sustaining momentum to build big innings. We get a couple guys on to start an inning, but we need to get a couple more hits or even productive outs to put pitchers under pressure."
The Eagles are scheduled to host single games on Tuesday and Wednesday before starting a MAC Freedom series at home against Misericordia on Friday.
