Baseball Rallies Past Washington College

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern Baseball erased an early 4-0 deficit on the way to a 6-4 win over the visiting Shoremen of Washington College (16-5). After giving up four runs in the second, the Eagles scored twice in the sixth, three times in the seventh, and once in the eighth to grab control of the game.

Eastern starter Colyn Hoffer worked out of a bases-loaded with nobody out jam in the first inning but could not do the same in the second. he escaped with a strikeout, and infield fly, and short fly ball to right field. The Shoremen loaded the bases with two hits and walk with one out in the second. Hoffer just missed with a 2-2 curveball to Aaron Barclay, and the Shoreman third baseman hit the next pitch into the gap in left-center for two RBI's. Hoffer struck out the next hitter, but fell victim to the uncertain nature of baseball when a short fly ball to right landed just out of the reach of two Eastern defenders for a 4-0 lead.

Only three Shoremen reached base in the next four innings against Hoffer.

"Colyn had the turbo jets on to start," Head Coach Jed Morris said after the game. "Once he got a little tired, he was able to stay in the game and with each batter. Everything got better as he settled in. His body language and his command both improved and he kept us int he game long enough for our offense to come around."

The Eastern offense finally broke through in the sixth. Craig Stanley started the rally with single to left. He moved the second on a Timmy Gorton and the two seniors then executed a double steal. Freddy Yahn drove a ball to center to bring in Stanley, and Jake Jones came through with a two-strike hit to plate Gorton.

"We have been really working on our two-strike approach," Morris said. "We came through with several good two-strike hits, but it was really good to see Jake come through in that moment."

The big inning in the sixth meant that Stanley and Gorton would come up again in the seventh. After Brad Clemons pushed a single to left center and Anthony Titano battled back from an 0-2 hole to draw a walk, Stanley topped a ball into a perfect spot on the infield for his second of three hits on the day. After a force at the plate on a Britton Lawrence ground ball, Gorton came to the plate with the bases loaded and only one out.

With nowhere to put him, the visitors had to pitch to Gorton, and the senior catcher came through with a towering double to the wall in right-center. The two-RBI double is the 42nd double of Gorton's career. He moved atop the Eastern career list in both doubles and total bases (254) today. Yahn hit another fly ball to drive in Lawrence from third.

Andrew Walters allowed only one hit in two innings of relief to earn the win. Andrew Behnam retired the only hitter he faced in the ninth before giving way to Grant Fisher for the final two outs. Fisher picked up the save with a ground ball and a strikeout.

"Our bullpen guys did a really nice job today." Morris added. "They threw strikes and executed their pitches. We brought Grant in to face a left-handed pinch hitter, but he showed good confidence against the right handers when they pinch hit for the pinch hitter."

Stanley drove in the final run of the game with a two-out single in the eighth. Stanley and Gorton each had three hits and Jordan Laboy had two.

The Eagles (6-7) travel to DeSales tomorrow to start an important MAC Freedom series that will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader at The Yard.
