Women's Tennis Tops Alvernia

Box Score READING, Pa. _ Eastern University Women's Tennis won five points quickly enough to beat out intermittent showers and earn a 5-1 win at Alvernia. Olivia Weaver and Cara Degnan won singles matches to beat the rains and earn the win.

With Alvernia missing a sixth player, the Eagles picked up two points just by showing up. Eastern won third doubles and sixth singles by default. With those two points in the bank, Eastern needed only three more points to secure a win. Olivia Weaver and Shannon Jugler combined to claim an 8-6 win at second singles to edge closer to the decisive number.

Alvernia won at first doubles, but without a six singles or third doubles match happening, the no. 5 doubles match started early and Cara Degnan earned a 6-0, 6-3 win to put the Eagles to within a point of the match.

Lauren Good and Jugler were both up in their singles matches when Weaver closed out the match 6-3,6-2 at third singles.

"It was a tough day with the rain coming just enough to wet the courts and stopping for what seemed just enough time t let them dry," Head Coach Mark Spangler said after the match. "Olivia was able to force the issue in her match enough to end it."

The Eagles start MAC Freedom play next week against DeSales on Wedesday.
