ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eight Eastern players scored and
Marcie Spencer turned away 11 shots as Eastern University Women's Lacrosse earned a 16-14 win against the visiting Medaille College Mavericks. The win came less than 20 hours after Eastern picked up a win in their opener on Friday night.
The Eagles struggled to win draws early and trailed 4-1 midway through the first half. The Eastern coaching staff moved
Mackenzie Dix into the middle of the circle to pull the draw, and the game changed. The Eagles won five of the next six draws and reeled of six-straight goals to pull out to a 7-4 lead.
As important, six different Eastern players scored. With the Maverick defense focused on stopping
Liz Brennan and
Julie Haggan, the other players int he attacking zone stepped up.
Jazzlyn Sullivan had two of her three goals in the first 25 minutes.
Allison Andres,
Carly Burns, Dix, and
Sabrina Campbell also scored goals before
Liz Brennan put away her first of three goals for the 7-4 lead.
The Eagles led 9-7 at halftime with DIx and Haggan answering Maverick goals. Both teams had 16 shots and 12 ground balls at half.
Medaille scored teh first two goals of the second half to tie the game, but Dix put away her third of the game to spark a six goal run for the Eagles. Draw controls were key in the burst and Eastern won seven of eight to keep possession.
Sam Brennan led the team with six, and
Julie Haggan battled for five.
Haggan,
Liz Brennan, and Dix pulled the draws and Eastern had a 17-14 edge in the game.
With the lead. the Eagles had to absorb some extra Medaille pressure. Spencer made five saves in a four-minute stretch to slow the Mavericks down. Medaille closed the gap to 15-13 with 30 seconds left, but Burns put away her second of the game to restore the three goal edge before Medaille scored at the buzzer.
Alex Imperatore played a key role in the clearing game and
Sam Brennan caused nine turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.
The Eagles will play at Immaculata University on Wednesday night.
