ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– After playing a tight first quarter against the No. 5 York College Spartans, Eastern University Men's Lacrosse gave up eight-straight second period goals on the way to a 19-6 season-opening loss.
Jake Billera had a pair of goals in the loss.
The Eagles grabbed the lead in the third minute after forcing a York turnover on a clearing attempt.
Matt Auletti pumped a shot just under the cross bar for his first of the year. The Spartans (2-0) equalized on a man-up chance and though they controlled possession for much of the rest of the quarter only managed to sneak one more shot past
Jameal Hadeed in the period. Eastern's senior goalie made four of his 13 saves in the first period.
The Eagles had chance to draw level in transition in the 12th minute, but a long-distance shot from
Bryan Mizell hit the underside of the crossbar and kicked away from goal.
Eastern started the second period a man-up after a York penalty after the whistle to end the first quarter. The Spartan man-down unit forced a turnover, and the Spartans had possession for most of the next ten minutes.
With their junior faceoff specialist Billy Sasso winning all nine second quarter faceoffs the Spartan offense kicked into gear. York led 10-1 before the Eagles put their first shot on goal in the period. When they did,
Mark Buannic converted a nice pass from
Hassan Mackey to give Eastern a glimmer of hope going to the intermission.
Missile scored a man-up goal in the third and Billera scored twice and
Kyle Mulrane scored the first goal of his career in the fourth.
The Eagles will host Haverford College on Saturday.
