ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball used a 27-5 second-half run to erase an 18-point deficit on the way to earning a 59-52 senior day win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies. The Eagles trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half but outscored the Aggies 47-24 in the second half.
The Eagles honored the programs four seniors before the game.
Taylor Price,
Taylor Azer,
Amanda Riiff, and
Amber Anderson each presented flowers to their mothers and assembled with pictures in a short ceremony. As Anderson suffered a season-ending injury in December, the two programs planned for her to start and make a lay-up to start the game and Eastern would allow the Aggies to tie the game at 2-2 before she would be subbed out of the game.
That initial basket was about the only offensive highlight of the first half for the Eagles. Eastern was 0-for-13 from 3-point range in the first half and went nearly 13 minutes with only a single basket in the middle part of the half. The Aggies led 28-8 with four minutes left in the half.
Things took a turn for the positive when the Eagles did not allow a point over the final four minutes while making the final two baskets of the half.
"We were not good in the first half," Head Coach
Eric Houston said after the game, "but we started to play with a little more energy at the defensive end in the final minutes. I challenged them to bring energy and to think about their effort and not the score."
While the teams traded points in the early going of the second half, the difference in energy was apparent from the outset. The Eagles, however, still trailed 35-17 with six minutes to play in the third.
Riff started the run with a floater in the lane against pressure. After a stop at the other end, Riiff grabbed an offensive rebound and found Price for a 3-pointer. With the energy level picking up further, Price yanked down a defensive rebound and found
Regie Robinson in transition for a lay up to force a Delaware Valley timeout.
The break did not slow the Eagles as they drew an offensive foul and then Azer found Riiff for an open 3-pointer to close the Delaware Valley lead to single digits for the first time since the first quarter. The Aggies scored to go up 37-27 and had a stop on defense to earn a chance to add on, but Azer ripped a ball free and scored in transition. Robinson and Price scored two more baskets in transition to close the gap to 37-33 at the end of the third period.
Eastern shot 9-for-19 from the floor with five offensive rebounds in the frame.
The momentum continued in the fourth. Price found Azer for a 3-pointer to start the fourth. The Eagles finally tied the game at 40-40 on a drive from Robinson. The junior forward put the Eagles up a minute later on a post move off a good feed from
Da'Naziah Brown. While it was the seniors' big day, Brown made several plays in the fourth quarter to help things along. The first year guard hit consecutive baskets with a 3-pointer putting the Eagles up 47-42 with 4:37 to to play in the game.
After a three-point play from Delaware Valley's Ashley Smink, Riiff hit a 3-pointer to answer off yet another feed from Price. The Eastern lead, did not hold up, and the Aggies tied the game at 50 with two minutes to play.
Riiff put the Eagles up 52-50 on another tough inside shot and then came through with a steal to set up a
Taylor Price transition basket. The Eastern defense continued as Robinson swatted a shot attempt, grabbed the rebound and found
Brianna Young-Harris in transition for a six point lead with 45 seconds to play. The Eagles made their free throws down the stretch to hold on.
The win snaps a nine-game skid for the Eagles (5-19, 2-11 MAC Freedom). Riff led a balanced Eastern attack with 12 points. She now has 157 3-pointers in her career. Azer had ten points and two steals.
Price, playing in her 103rd career game, scored 11 points, dished out nine assists, and grabbed seven rebounds in a team-high 38 minutes.
Danielle Skedzielewski led Delaware Valley with 15 points.
"I was really happy for the seniors," Houston concluded. "We finished the game with the kind of energy and commitment to each other that we love to see."
The Eagles will wrap up there season at Wilkes on Saturday.
