CENTER VALLEY, Pa.– In the the 95th minute, Eastern University Men's Soccer freshman midfielder
Bryce Wahinya put away his first collegiate goal on a pass from
Cade Harmon to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 overtime win at DeSales. The eighth-straight win the team's sixth 1-0 win this fall.
How It Happened:
Wahinya's goal came on his second chance of the overtime. Harmon found him near the penalty spot in the opening seconds of the extra frame, and his shot beat the goalkeeper, but a sliding stop by a DeSales defender on the goal line kept the ball out of the goal.
The tally came after
Jacob Myers nodded a short DeSales clear back into a dangerous area.
Colin Furlong won an aerial battle for the ball and headed it forward.
Cade Harmon collected the ball outside the box and lifted a pass over a defender and into Wahinya's path for the game-winner.
With a steady breeze blowing up the field, the Eagles (13-2-1, 6-0 MAC Freedom) had nearly all the play in the opening half. Eastern enjoyed an 11-2 edge in shots.
Sam Sutherland hit a ball off the upper corner of the goal in the 15th minute and DeSales goalkeeper TJ Cochoran made a spectacular save on a
Julio Ardon effort in the 30th minute.
The Eagles had more of the play in the second half as well, but the Bulldogs had chances.
Anthony Hitchcock was equal to the task with two second half saves and some good play off his line.
The Eagles had several free kick chances in a game that featured 27 fouls. It seemed, with the the soft and wet conditions that a restart might prove to be the difference. The Eagles had two goals disallowed for fouls in the box, and Cochoran made three second-half stops.
Coach Payne Says:
"Today was a huge result for our season. We know what is at stake with the rest of our remaining games and we want to finish our season strong. I think today's continues to push in that direction."
"We knew the field was going to be a factor in the game. We talk a lot about not letting external factors influence us. Our program stresses the importance of worrying about the things we can control. The field conditions was not in our control and we came into today's game knowing we would have to make some adjustments in the way we play, but we could not make that an excuse for today. We focused on winning first and second balls, defending well as a team, and set pieces. Those are always points of emphasis when we play but I think it was even more important in today's game. We had to be a little more direct and have a low-risk attitude in our own end. I thought our guys executed that plan well"
"With that tactical emphasis, Bryce didn't play the whole second half. He is a good player who has been playing a at a good level for us. We thought his fresh legs would help us in overtime. He ended up getting the game winner. It was a quality finish off of a special pass from Cade Harmon. "
"Sometimes it takes a long time to break the other team down. I want our team to have belief that we will break through in the second half and overtime in tight games. We don't always score in the first 5-10 minutes or the first half even though we are trying to. I thought we had good belief today."
