ABINGTON, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Soccer continued to make their goals count with yet another 1-0 win on the road.
Jacob Myers scored in the 60th minute and the Eastern defense held as the Eagles won at Penn State Abington to run their winning streak to nine games.
How It Happened:
The Eagles (14-2-1) controlled much of the play, but the host Lions (11-5-1) held their ground. Eastern had a 6-2 edge in first half shots. Myers had the best chance of the opening frame, but his header went off the crossbar in the 28th minute.
Liam Harmon hit the cross bar in the 51st minute before the Eagles finally broke through just before the hour mark. Myers cleaned up the rebound on a long throw from
Billy Walenda to put away his team-best eighth goal of the season. Over the past 13 games, the senior center back has scored more goals (8) than the team has allowed (6). Eastern is 12-0-1 in that stretch.
Anthony Hitchcock made two saves to secure his sixth shutout in 11 matches. The sophomore is 10-0-1 in goal this year.
Coach Payne Says:
"I thought we were in control of the game from the beginning. It took us some time to break through, but we eventually did. We were able to see out the match. It is great to get another shutout. I believe that the teams that play in the NCAA tournament have a low goals against average."
"The surface, definitely made it hard and might have equalized the game some. We felt we got some bad breaks on calls, but I was pleased that our players handled these circumstances well. We are happy to win and improve our resume."
"Our program is excited to play at home against a very good King's team on Saturday."
Up Next:
The Eagles will host King's College in the regular season finale on Saturday. Both teams have secured home matches in the MAC Freedom Tournament. Eastern can secure the top seed in the tournament with a win or a tie in the match. Misericordia and Manhattanville are also playing on Saturday. The winner of that match will be the third seed.
