Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Rolls Past Del Val

ST, DAVIDS, Pa.– It took a little time, but once Eastern University Men's Soccer found the back of the net, the Eagles ran out to a 5-0 win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies. The win is the seventh straight for the MAC Freedom-leading Eagles (12-2-1, 5-0 MAC Freedom). Five different Eastern players scored and the Eastern defense allowed just a single shot on goal on the way to a seventh shutout of the season.

How It Happened:
The Eagles had several golden opportunities in the opening minutes, but Delaware Valley goalkeeper Josh Jarrett made six saves and got some help from a teammate with another save on the goal line to keep the Eagles off the board for the first fifteen minutes. The Eagles had seven corners and a penalty kick, but could not find the net until Jacob Myers tucked home his team-best seventh goal after on the final corner.

Furlong's corner went long, but Julio Ardon chased it down on the left side. The Eagles swung the ball back to Furlong on the right side at the top of the box. The senior midfielder flipped a cross to the back post. Jake Sankey won an open header and bounced a ball directly in front of the goal where Myers finished with composure.

Forty-three seconds later, Billy Walenda headed home his third of the year on a Jake Cahill cross. Cahill created the third goal with a run into the box from the left side. The senior flank defender beat his mark and was dropped to the turf for a penalty kick. Liam Harmon converted the chance for his first goal as an Eagle.

Alex McGlynn scored Eastern's fourth goal on a shot from the top of the box in the 40th minute. It is the first collegiate goal for the first-year midfielder. Eastern had a 20-to-0 edge in first-half shots.

David Pegella scored the last goal of the match in the 88th minute. The goal was the first of his career for the first-year forward.

The Aggies (3-11, 0-5 MAC Freedom) had their best chance of the match in the 65th minute, but Ben Lochstampfor made the initial save and the Eastern back row cleared the ball from danger. Anthony Hitchcock played the first half in goal before giving way to Lochstampfor and Arath Viesca in the second half.

Coach Payne Says:
"We did a good job today. I thought we came out and took care of business and had the right mentality for this match. I was impressed with our percentage of shots on goal. We held them to one shot, and we only had four fouls. It was great for everyone on our roster to play and to get a shutout."

"We know how important Saturday is for our standing in the conference. We are pushing to host in the conference tournament. DeSales is always a tough test."

Up Next:
The Eagles are ranked third in the first official NCAA Regional ranking. That ranking is calculated by record and strength of schedule formulas, and it takes into consideration head-to-head success. The Eagles could conceivably drop in the rankings without losing a match, but that position puts the Eagles into a spot where an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament is possible or into a good seeding situation. Every match the rest of the way has importance for the ranking.

Saturday's test at DeSales is a rematch of last fall's MAC Freedom Championship match. Eastern fell in penalty kicks in that contest.
