Women's Soccer Holds Off Del Val for 2-1 Win

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer scored two early goals and held on for a 2-1 MAC Freedom win over the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies. Nicole Weenink had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles.

How it Happened:
The Eagles broke a four-game scoring drought early in the match. After the Aggies had an attempt at goal early, Weenink won possession of an Adrianna Rowlands punt and played a switching pass toward Amy Radcliffe who continued the swith of the field with a pass out to the right flank. Kayla Patitucci met the ball near the sideline and bent a right-footed serve in behind the Aggie back row. Weenink beat her mark to the ball in front of the goal and tucked home her team-best sixth of the season.

Weenink had a chance to double the lead in the 16th minute, but Aggie goalkeeper Haley Young was quick off her line to stymie the chance.

In the 25th minute, Gabriella Kaiafas picked up a switching pass on the left side and carved a ball into space for Weenink behind the Aggie back row. The junior forward turned the corner and forced Young to commit to the near post before slotting a pass into the middle of the box. Radcliffe calmly knocked the ball into the open goal for her third tally of the year.

While the Eagles had more of the ball, the Aggies held a 12-8 edge in shots at the end of the first half. Rowlands made seven of her nine saves before the intermission.

After half, the Eagles had several good chances to build a 3-0 lead. Radcliffe put a header of a Zoe Galvin corner kick over the bar from in close and Katerina Mouzakitis missed just wide in the 70th minute.  Del Val cut the lead in half less than a mnute later ona  rebound goal by Calla Gibson.

Rowlands made her best save of the day in the 82nd minute to keep the Eagles in front, and the Eastern team managed the clock en route to the 2-1 win.

Coach West says:
"It was great to get a result today, but we can still work on finding ways to limit chances. The first part of the second half I thought we played well and controlled the flow of the game. The second part though it became a game of transition and Del Val was able to create chances. We can still grow in killing off a game through possession in the opponent's half. There were bright spots in the game, but those bright spots need to become more consistent throughout the game."

Up Next:

The Eagles are at DeSales this Saturday and then will play at Franklin and Marshall midweek next week. At this point, all indications are that Eastern's post-season fate will be determined on the final Saturday of the regular season at home against King's. The Eagles can make a play for the third seed with wins in their final two league matches, but even with a win against DeSales the Eagles will likely need to beat King's to earn a spot. Saturday's game at DeSales begins at noon.
