Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls in Fourth to Manhattanville

ST.DAVIDS, Pa.– For the third time in three games this week, Eastern University Women's Basketball (4-13, 1-5 MAC Freedom) held a slim lead heading into the fourth quarter. As happened at rowan on Monday and at FDU-Florham on Wednesday, the Eagles were unable to find enough offense late against the visiting Manhattanville College Valiants and fell 62-53.

The two teams battled through every possession of a defensive first half and were tied 28-28 heading to the locker room. Eight Eastern players scored and the team shot 11-of-22 from the floor. The visiting Valiants (13-2, 4-1 MAC Freedom) made only 44 percent from the floor but picked up extra shots with eight offensive rebounds.

The third period was even more deliberate. Eastern scored only a single field goal in the first six and a half minutes, but still managed to tie the game at 32-32 when Taylor Price finished inside with just over three minutes left in the period. The Valiants built a five point edge before Eastern scored the final five point of the period to lead 37-35 with ten minutes left. Da'Naziah Brown hit a late 3-pointer to put the Eagles up.

Eastern shot only 3-of-18 from the floor in the third, and those offensive struggles continued against a Manhattnville team that has made its mark on the defensive end this year. The Valiants are tied atop the MAC Freedom and are holding teams to less than 28 percent from the floor. Eastern made seven shots from the floor in the period, but the Valiants, who were only 3-of-10 from the floor, feasted at the foul line down the stretch. Kayleah McGuire was 10-of-10 from the line and the Valiants made 20-of-22 in the period.

Even with Manhattanville shooting lights-out from the line, the Eagles closed the gap to 52-48 on Brown's third 3-pointer of the game with a minute left. The visitors made 10-of-12 free throws in the final minute for the final margin.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Eastern was only 10-of-41 in the second half. Brianna Young-Harris and Brown each finished with 14 points in the loss. Young-Harris saw her run of double-doubles stop at three. She finished with six rebounds a block and two steals. Brown, meanwhile, picked up her first career double-double. The first-year guard grabbed nine offensive rebounds and finished with 11 total boards.

MaGuire finished with a game-high 21 points and Sarah Coutu added 17 to lead Manhattanville.

The Eagles will play at Delaware Valley on Wednesday night.
