PURCHASE, N.Y. – For the second time this week, Eastern University Women's Soccer rallied from a late deficit to win in regulation.
Amy Radcliffe scored twice in the final eight minutes to lift the Eagles (4-3-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) to a 4-3 win at Manhattanville College in the MAC Freedom opener for both teams.
Radcliffe, a sophomore midfielder, scored her first career goal to tie the match in the 83rd minute and then headed home her second for the game winner just over two minutes later.
The Eagles had a pair of leads early, but each time, the host Valiants rallied.
Nicole Weenink put Eastern up in the ninth minute.
Alondra Cervantes started the play with the ball on the left side of the field. The senior midfielder whipped a pass across the field to switch the play.
Katy Laurie stepped into a central channel to meet the pass and clipped another switching ball in behind the Manhattanville back row. Weenink beat her mark to the ball and rolled in her first goal of the year with a clever finish around a charging goalkeeper.
The Valiants drew level on a 30 yard blast from Jess Roman at the midpoint of the first half. Both teams put two shots on goal in the first half.
The Eagles again grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute. Cervantes again started the play. From her spot deep in the midfield she curled a pass onto Weenink's front foot heading into the attacking zone. The sophomore winger took initiative and beat her mark with a strong move before slotting a ball back into the scoring area.
Caroline Lozzi met the cross and ripped a shot on goal that caromed off a retreating defender and into the top of the net.
"Nicole was dynamic and creative all afternoon," Head Coach
Brandon West said after the match. " Caroline and Mel [
Melanie Witter] put themselves in good situations to score. I thought our back four did a very nice job limiting their chances in the run of play."
The Eastern lead, however, would be short-lived.
The Valiants took advantage of two restart chances to grab the lead. Lauren Vallarelli ran onto a long free kick for a goal from in close after an Eastern foul near midfield in the 66th minute.
Two minutes later, the Eagles gave up a corner kick on the Valiants left side. Roman curled a hard in swung ball to the near post that
Adrianna Rowlands could not keep out of the net.
With close to 22 minutes to find a goal, the Eagles again had to push numbers forward. Weenink created the chance for the equalizer with another run up the left side. The sophomore drew the attention of a trio of defenders and pushed the ball off one of them for Eastern's sixth corner kick of the match.
Courtney Davis curled the ball to the back post where Radcliffe was unmarked for a free header six yards out. She powered her header back to the near post for her first career goal.
Less than two minutes later, Cervantes was taken down near the edge of the box. Davis ripped a shot over the wall, but the Valiant goalkeeper parried her attempt around the post for another corner kick from the left side.
While Radcliffe went unchallenged on her first goal. She took a heavy challenge on the game-winner. Davis again curled the ball toward the back post. Radcliffe was marked, and a second Valiant defender was flying at her. She powered a header to the back post and wound up underneath a defender.
"Overall, we did not play our best today," West acknowledged. "We found a way to get it done. This is a selfless group that competes for each other. It is good to start the conference season with a win."
The Eagles, unbeaten in their last six games, are at Rowan on Wednesday.
