Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey lost in heartbreaking fashion at DeSales today. Despite controlling much of the play and holding a 21-7 edge in shots, a 16-6 edge in penalty corners, and controlling much of the game, the Eagles fell, 2-1, in double overtime.

Eastern jumped to an early lead on Ali Balmer's fourth goal of the year. The sophomore forward touched home a Shannon Jugler shot in the tenth minute.

That lead, however, was short-lived. Kylie Honnick-Payne picked off an Eastern pass in the defensive end and dribbled toward goal. The DeSales forward made a clever move to elude the sliding Nicole Berger and to put away her ninth of the year and first of two goals on the day.

Eastern had a 9-2 edge in shots for the remainder of the first half, but the Eagles were unable to retake the lead.

"We had a lot of time in the circle," Head Coach Camrin Azzarano said of her team's attacking efforts. "We did really well keeping them under pressure, but we need to create better chances with that pressure."

The Eagles controlled the second period with a 5-2 edge in shots and a 7-1 lead in penalty corners, but once again that pressure did not result in a game-winner.

The control of possession and field position was even more pronounced in the first overtime. The Eagles had five shots and three penalty corners in the first overtime. DeSales did not have one of either.

Honnick-Payne knocked in the game-winner on in the 90th minute. The last DeSales shot before the goal was taken in 37th minute.

"This was a hard one," Azzarano said. "Our players worked so hard. I can't stress enough how proud I am of how hard they worked through this game. They finished their chances."

The Eagles (4-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom) will play Wesley College at home on Wednesday.
