ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the visiting Wesley College Wolverines. Eastern had a 23-10 lead in shots and a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners, but the Wolverines found the game-winner with 27 minutes left and held on for the win.
Wesley opened the scoring in the tenth minute on a Morgan Gannon flick to the upper right corner from eight yards out. The Eagles controlled play for most of the rest of the half, but they still trailed at intermission.
Eastern opened the second half with a flurry of opportunity in front of the Wesley net. The Eagles earned a penalty stroke after an
Alison Hoag shot was stopped on the goal line by a the body of a Wesley defender. The infraction worked out for the visitors as the Eagles were unable to convert.
Moments later,
Ali Balmer forced another penalty corner and
Shannon Jugler pushed a ball past Wesley goalie Sidney Knott, but a Wesley defender swept the ball off the goal line to keep the Wolverines in the lead.
Balmer finally brought the Eagles level with a high flick over Knott's outstretched pads and under the cross bar.
Gina Miller provided the service for the goal.
Less than two minutes later, Gannon put away her second of the match on a deflection of a powerful serve by Kasey Fry.
Down 2-1, the Eagles increased their offensive push and secured multiple corners. Eastern had eight shots and five penalty corners in the final ten minutes, but the Wesley defensive wall held.
Eastern (4-7) returns to MAC Freedom competition with a road test at FDU Florham on Saturday.
